Missed calls can mean missed jobs. A booking page and a simple assistant can help, as long as a real person stays in charge.
What you'll need
A Google Account (personal or Workspace) or another booking tool
A computer (Google says you can't create appointment schedules in the Calendar phone app)
Your services, how long each takes, and your hours
A short list of common questions and answers
A plan for who handles messages the AI can't
What is an AI receptionist?
An AI receptionist is software that answers calls, texts, or website chats for you. It can share your hours, answer common questions, and send a booking link. A booking page is a web page where customers pick an open time on your calendar.
How does a simple setup work?
How do I set up a free booking page in Google Calendar?
These steps come from Google's help page:
Open Google Calendar on a computer.
Click Create (top left), then choose Appointment schedule.
Add a title and set the appointment length (for example, 60 minutes).
Set your general availability: the days and hours you take bookings.
Set a scheduling window. By default, Google requires at least 4 hours' notice before a booking.
Click Next, then set up your booking page: location or video link, a description, and a booking form.
Turn on "Require email verification" to cut down on spam bookings.
Set confirmations and reminders, then click Save.
Share the link on your website and Google Business Profile.
Want to collect payment at booking? Google says you can connect a Stripe account to request payment for appointments. Stripe is an online payment service.

What California rules should I know?
We checked these laws through official text shown in search results, since the Legislature's site blocked our direct page fetch. Please confirm with the linked pages or a lawyer.
Bot disclosure. California Business and Professions Code 17941 makes it illegal to use a bot online to trick someone into thinking it's a person in order to drive a sale. You're not liable if you clearly disclose that it's a bot. We suggest your assistant always says it's automated at the start.
Call recording. California Penal Code 632 requires the consent of all parties to record a confidential conversation. Section 632.7 covers calls to or from cell and cordless phones. If your AI phone tool records or transcribes calls, tell callers at the start.
How do I keep it working well?
Write clear answers for your top 10 questions.
Test it yourself by calling or chatting as a customer.
Review messages daily. Fix any wrong answers fast.
Update it when your hours, prices, or services change.

Questions people ask
Can I set up online booking for free?
Google says you can create an appointment schedule in Google Calendar with a personal Google Account or a Workspace account. Some features need an eligible paid Google Workspace or Google One subscription.
Do I have to tell customers they are talking to a bot?
In California, Business and Professions Code section 17941 makes it unlawful to use a bot online to mislead someone about its artificial identity to drive a sale. A clear disclosure that it is a bot avoids liability. We suggest always saying so up front.
Can my AI phone assistant record calls?
Be careful. California Penal Code section 632 requires the consent of all parties to record a confidential conversation, and section 632.7 covers cell and cordless phone calls. Tell callers at the start if a call is recorded, and ask a lawyer if unsure.
What should an AI assistant not handle?
Hand complaints, refunds, emergencies, custom quotes, and anything involving payment details to a person. Use AI for basics like hours, services, and booking links.
