What you'll need
Two or three name ideas, close to the business name
A card for the yearly domain renewal
The login you will use at the registrar, stored in a password manager
1. Pick and buy the name
Search the name at a registrar, the company that sells domains. Read the renewal price, not only the first-year discount. Turn on auto-renew only if you will notice the charge. Save the registrar login somewhere other than your only inbox.
We are not naming a registrar. Compare them on their own sites. Buying the name is separate from the website. If you want the site built with you, that is the Digital Storefront.
2. Put email on that name
Google Workspace is one way to get you@yourdomain.com. The click-path, the editions, and the TXT steps are in set up Google Workspace with your domain.
Short version of Google's check: in the Admin console, copy the TXT value that includes google-site-verification=. At the registrar, add a TXT record. For the root domain, the host is blank or @. Confirm in the Admin console. Google says this can take up to 72 hours. Keep the record until verification succeeds.
An address such as info@ can be an alias or a shared inbox.
3. Use the address in public
Put it on the website, on invoices, and on your Google Business Profile. Retire the personal Gmail address from the profile once the new mail is arriving. The steps to edit the profile phone and website are in update your address, phone, and website.
Common mistakes
Letting the domain expire because the renewal was a surprise.
The only recovery email is the new business address. Keep a second email on the registrar account.
Publishing the address before a test message arrives.
Questions people ask
Do I have to buy a website to get a professional email?
No. You buy the domain name. Email can live on that name even before the website is finished.
How does Google check that I own the domain?
You add a TXT record at the company that sold you the domain. Google says verification can take up to 72 hours.
Can I keep using a free Gmail address?
You can. A business address on your own domain is easier for customers to trust and easier to hand to the next person you hire.
We will look at the site you already have and email what to fix first.
