What you'll need

  • A Google Workspace admin account

  • The user who should receive the mail

  • The address you want, on a domain you have already verified

1. Add the alias

In the Admin console, go to Directory, then Users, and open the user. Choose Add Alternate Emails. Under Alternate email, type the part before the @. If you have a secondary domain, you can select it. Save.

Google says the change can take up to 24 hours.

2. Know what the alias cannot do

One alias can sit on only one user. Putting info@ on a second user is not allowed. One user can have up to 30 aliases, and the alias has no password. Diagram: Sac Business Launch.

Mail sent to the alias arrives in the primary inbox. The alias is not a separate Google Account, so nobody signs in with it. Aliases are not private. People who can open that mailbox can see mail sent to every alias on it.

Only one user can receive a given alias. When several people need one shared address, Google points you to delegation, not a second copy of the same alias. Our shared inbox guide covers a Google Group, which is the other common way to share info@.

More than one person can send from an alias if each person adds it as a custom From address.

3. Send from the alias

The user follows Gmail's "send from a different address" steps. We wrote those out in send mail as another address.

Common mistakes

  • Creating a new paid user when an alias would do.

  • Giving the same alias to two people. Google allows it on one user only.

  • Expecting the alias to have its own password, Drive, or calendar.

Questions people ask

How many email aliases can one user have?

Google says up to 30 aliases per user, at no extra cost.

Can someone sign in with the alias?

No. An alias is not a Google Account. Mail to the alias arrives in that person's primary inbox.

Can two people share one alias?

Only one user can receive a given alias. Google recommends mailbox delegation when several people need the same address. Several people can still send from an alias if each one sets a custom From address.
