Gmail open on a computer
Access to the inbox of the address you want to send from
For a Workspace alias, an admin who has already added that alias
1. Add the address
On a computer, open Gmail, then Settings, then See all settings. Open Accounts and import, or Accounts. Under Send mail as, choose Add another email address. Enter the name and the address, then continue. Gmail sends a confirmation. Open the link. The message is from send-as-noreply@google.com. Check spam if you do not see it.
2. Use it
While you write, open the From line and pick the address. You can make one address the default. You can also set a different reply-to address.
A Workspace user may need an admin to add the domain alias first. That setup is in add an email alias.
3. If Gmail asks for the other server
For an address that is not already Gmail, Gmail may ask how to send through that other service. Google's help lists SSL on port 465, or TLS on port 25 or 587. Google says an unsecured connection on port 25 is not recommended. Use the settings your other email host publishes.
4. The January 2027 change
Starting January 2027, Gmail will no longer support Send as for third-party addresses such as @yahoo.com or @outlook.com. Google says this does not change Google Workspace aliases or other Gmail addresses you own. If you still send as a Yahoo or Outlook address, plan a move to an address on your own domain before that date.
Common mistakes
Adding a shared store address as a personal alias when the whole team needs the inbox. Use a Google Group for that.
