Customers like to reach you the way they already talk to friends. Here is what Google offers today, and how to set it up.
What you'll need
A phone number that can get texts, or a WhatsApp click-to-chat link
Links to your social media pages
Any extra business phone numbers (no fax numbers)
The Google Account that manages your profile
What changed with Google chat?
Google says chat and call history were removed from Business Profiles as of July 31, 2024. Calls from your profile still work, and you can still see call counts in your Performance report. Customers can no longer request quotes through your profile.
How to add a WhatsApp or text chat option
Open your profile. On a computer, search Google for my business. In the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right.
Select Edit profile, then Contact.
Next to "Chat," select Edit.
Open the "Chat" dropdown and pick WhatsApp or Text message.
Enter your WhatsApp click-to-chat link, or a phone number that can receive texts.
Select Save.
How to add social media links
Google allows one link each for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X, and YouTube, in select regions.
Select Edit profile, then Contact.
Next to "Social profiles," select Edit.
Pick a platform from the dropdown and paste the full link, like
https://www.instagram.com/yourname.Select Add social profile to add another.
Select Save.
If a link will not save, Google says check that it is not broken, duplicated, or for an unsupported platform. To remove one, select Delete next to it, then Save.
Extra phone numbers, or hiding your number
Extra numbers: Google lets you add up to 2 more numbers besides your main one. Mobile or landline, not fax. Add them under Edit profile, then Contact.
Hide your number: select More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings. Under "Phone number," turn on Don't show.
Common mistakes
Adding a chat option nobody checks. A slow reply can cost you the customer.
Using a personal social account. Link your business pages.
Listing a call center number as your main line. Google prefers a local number for each location.
Typing the link the wrong way. Use the formats Google lists, like
https://www.facebook.com/yourname.
When people tap through from Google, they often land on your website next. Our Free Website Check shows how ready it is.
Google changes Business Profile screens often. We checked these steps in October 2026. If a button looks different, the Google help pages below have the latest.
